New Procedures
Pursuant to new legislation, effective Sept. 20, 2019, the State of Ohio has changed the requirements to become a notary in Ohio, and centralized the administration of the process under the Ohio Secretary of State.
To review the changes, please visit the Ohio Laws and Administrative Regulations website. To summarize, the process includes a criminal records check, a three-hour educational course, and a test before submitting an application.
Owing to these changes, the Wayne County Bar Association is no longer involved in the process of becoming a notary. Those interested in receiving a notary public commission are advised to visit the Ohio Secretary of State’s website.
Note: Once you receive your notary commission from the State, you will need to return to the Courthouse, on the square in Wooster, to record your commission with the Clerk of Courts Office. The fee for recording is $5 payable by cash or check.
